Daniel Joseph Cates, 65, of Olathe, Kan., passed away on September 20, 2013, at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was born on February 25, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo., to Joseph and Jane Cates. He attended Shawnee Mission Schools and the University of Kansas, and was second-generation President and CEO at Cates Sheet Metal Industries in Lenexa, Kan. Dan was an avid golfer and longtime member of Brookridge Golf and Country Club, as well as Shadow Glen Golf Club. He was also a devoted Kansas Jayhawk and supporter of the Williams Educational Fund. Dan's biggest enjoyment came from spending time with his family, friends and four four-legged children at his treasured house on Tablerock Lake. Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Libby Cates; mother Jane Cates of Lake Quivira, Kan.; sister Nancy Cates of Friday Harbor, Wash.; daughter Shannon Julian of Olathe, Kan.; son Carson Cates and wife Shannon of Lenexa, Kan.; four grandchildren, Justin and Cassidy Julian, and Elise and Evan Cates; and numerous family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Cates. Visitation will be Thursday, September 26, 5-7 p.m., at Overland Park Lutheran Church, 7810 W. 79th Street. A private memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Wayside Waifs or a charity of your choice .
